Description
A classic Salisbury Steak recipe featuring juicy ground beef patties simmered in a rich and savory mushroom gravy, perfect served over mashed potatoes, rice, or buttered noodles for a comforting meal.
Ingredients
Scale
For the Salisbury Steaks
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
- 1 large egg
- 1/2 medium onion, finely chopped
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
For the Mushroom Gravy
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 8 ounces mushrooms, sliced
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 teaspoon fresh thyme (optional)
Instructions
- Prepare the skillet: Heat a large skillet over medium heat and drizzle in the olive oil to get it hot and ready for cooking the patties.
- Make the patties: In a mixing bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, finely chopped onion, garlic powder, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and black pepper. Mix gently until just combined, then form the mixture into 4 oval-shaped patties.
- Sear the patties: Ensure the skillet is hot for a good sear. Place the beef patties in the skillet and cook for about 4 minutes on each side until browned on the outside. Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside temporarily.
- Sauté mushrooms: In the same skillet, add butter and sliced mushrooms. Sauté the mushrooms until golden brown and tender, scraping up any browned bits from the patties.
- Make the gravy: Sprinkle the flour over the sautéed mushrooms and stir well to combine. Slowly whisk in the beef broth, making sure there are no lumps, and add fresh thyme if using. Bring the mixture to a simmer and cook until thickened to a gravy-like consistency.
- Simmer patties in gravy: Return the seared patties to the skillet with the mushroom gravy. Spoon gravy over the patties and simmer on low heat for 10–15 minutes, allowing the patties to cook through and absorb the flavors.
- Serve: Plate the Salisbury steaks generously topped with mushroom gravy. Serve warm over mashed potatoes, rice, or buttered noodles for a hearty meal.
Notes
- For extra flavor, you can add chopped fresh herbs like parsley or thyme to the beef mixture.
- To make this dish gluten-free, substitute breadcrumbs and flour with gluten-free options.
- Let the patties rest after cooking for a few minutes to retain juiciness.
- Adjust salt and pepper to taste depending on your preference.
- Using fresh mushrooms will give the gravy a better texture and flavor than canned mushrooms.
