Description
This simple and healthy recipe shows you how to steam fresh broccoli to perfection. Steaming broccoli preserves its vibrant color, crisp-tender texture, and nutritious content, making it a quick and easy side dish for any meal.
Ingredients
Scale
Ingredients
- 1 large head broccoli
Instructions
- Prepare the Broccoli: Cut broccoli crowns off of the large stems and then cut them into bite-sized florets. Rinse them thoroughly under cold water to remove any visible dirt or debris.
- Heat Water: Fill a pot large enough to fit a steamer basket with about 1 inch of water. Bring the water to a rolling boil over high heat. If a steamer basket is unavailable, the broccoli can be placed directly into the pot.
- Steam the Broccoli: Place broccoli florets into the steamer basket, then set the basket in the boiling water pot. Cover with a lid, reduce heat to medium, and steam the broccoli for 5-6 minutes until it turns bright green and a fork can easily pierce through.
- Serve: Remove the broccoli promptly from the pot to stop the cooking process and serve immediately for optimal flavor and texture.
Notes
- Don’t overcook broccoli to maintain its nutrients and bright color.
- If you don’t have a steamer basket, you can steam directly in the pot with water but watch closely to avoid boiling the florets.
- Optional seasoning: Add a pinch of salt, a squeeze of lemon, or a drizzle of olive oil after steaming for extra flavor.
- Steaming time can vary slightly depending on the size of broccoli florets.
