Description

These Crispy Rice Paper Dumplings are delicate, golden parcels filled with a flavorful mix of cooked rice, shredded vegetables, and aromatic herbs. Wrapped in softened rice paper and pan-fried to a perfect crisp, they make an irresistible appetizer or snack that combines crunchy texture with savory goodness.

Ingredients

Scale

Dumpling Wrappers

  • 1 cup rice paper sheets

Filling

  • 1/2 cup cooked rice
  • 1/4 cup shredded cabbage
  • 1/4 cup shredded carrots
  • 2 tablespoons chopped cilantro
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon grated ginger
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper

For Frying

  • 1 cup vegetable oil (for frying)

Instructions

  1. Soften Rice Paper: Fill a shallow dish with warm water. Dip one rice paper sheet into the water for about 5 seconds until it becomes soft and pliable.
  2. Prepare Wrapper Surface: Lay the softened rice paper sheet flat on a clean, dry surface, ready for filling.
  3. Make Filling Mixture: In a small bowl, combine the cooked rice, shredded cabbage, shredded carrots, chopped cilantro, soy sauce, sesame oil, grated ginger, minced garlic, salt, and pepper. Mix thoroughly to blend flavors.
  4. Assemble Dumpling: Spoon a small amount of the filling mixture onto the center of the rice paper sheet.
  5. Fold Dumpling: Fold the sides of the rice paper over the filling first, then fold the bottom up over the filling. Roll the rice paper from the bottom tightly to encase the filling into a neat dumpling.
  6. Repeat Assembly: Repeat the softening, filling, and folding process with remaining rice paper sheets and filling mixture.
  7. Heat Oil: Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet or frying pan over medium-high heat until hot but not smoking.
  8. Fry Dumplings: Carefully place dumplings in the hot oil, avoiding overcrowding. Fry each side for 2 to 3 minutes until golden brown and crispy.
  9. Drain Dumplings: Using tongs, remove the dumplings from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
  10. Serve: Serve the crispy rice paper dumplings hot with your favorite dipping sauce for a delicious appetizer or snack.

Notes

  • Be careful not to soak the rice paper sheets too long in the water, or they may become too fragile to handle.
  • Ensure the oil is hot enough before frying to achieve a crispy texture without absorbing excess oil.
  • You can customize the filling by adding cooked shrimp, ground meat, or tofu for extra protein.
  • Serve immediately for best texture as dumplings may lose crispiness if left to sit.
  • Use a neutral oil with a high smoke point like vegetable oil for frying.
