Ingredients
Scale
Cake
- 1 box white cake mix (plus ingredients called for on the box such as egg whites, water, and oil)
Gelatin Soaking Mixture
- 1 packet cotton candy-flavored gelatin (3 oz)
- 1 cup boiling water
- ½ cup cold water
Topping & Garnish
- 1 tub whipped topping (8 oz, thawed)
- Pink and blue food coloring (optional)
- Cotton candy for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Prepare and Bake Cake: Preheat the oven to 350°F and lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish. Prepare the white cake batter according to the package instructions using the specified ingredients like egg whites, water, and oil. Pour into the baking dish and bake as directed, about 30 minutes. Allow the cake to cool for 15 minutes after baking.
- Poke Holes in Cake: Use the handle of a wooden spoon to poke holes all over the surface of the warm cake, spacing them approximately 1 inch apart to allow the gelatin mixture to soak in thoroughly.
- Make Gelatin Soaking Mixture: In a bowl, dissolve the cotton candy-flavored gelatin packet into 1 cup of boiling water. Stir continuously until fully dissolved. Add ½ cup cold water and stir to combine.
- Soak Cake: Pour the prepared gelatin mixture evenly over the cake, making sure it seeps into all the holes. Place the cake in the refrigerator and chill for at least 2 hours so the gelatin fully sets inside the cake.
- Prepare Whipped Topping: Once chilled, divide the whipped topping into two separate bowls. Tint one bowl with pink food coloring and the other with blue food coloring if desired. Gently swirl the two tinted toppings together to create a marbled effect.
- Frost the Cake: Spread the swirled whipped topping evenly over the gelatin-chilled cake to cover the surface completely.
- Garnish and Serve: Optionally, garnish the top of the cake with fresh cotton candy just before serving to keep it light and fluffy. Slice and enjoy this festive, colorful dessert.
Notes
- Cotton candy gelatin is often seasonal; raspberry or bubblegum gelatin can be great substitutes.
- Adding colorful sprinkles on top of the whipped topping enhances the fun presentation.
- Garnish with cotton candy immediately before serving to prevent it from melting or dissolving.
