Description

These Blood Orange Margaritas are a vibrant, refreshing twist on the classic margarita cocktail, featuring freshly squeezed blood orange and lime juices combined with silver tequila and orange liqueur. Perfect for gatherings, this recipe yields eight delicious drinks with a balanced sweet and tart flavor.

Ingredients

Scale

Juices and Liquids

  • 4 cups freshly squeezed blood orange juice
  • 1 cup freshly squeezed lime juice
  • 3 cups silver tequila
  • 1 ½ cups orange liqueur (Cointreau recommended)

Sweetener

  • ¼ cup superfine sugar

For Serving

  • lime wedges
  • kosher salt
  • blood orange and lime slices (optional garnish)

Instructions

  1. Prepare Margarita Mix: In a large pitcher, combine the freshly squeezed blood orange juice, lime juice, silver tequila, orange liqueur, and superfine sugar. Stir thoroughly until the sugar has completely dissolved. Cover and refrigerate the mixture for at least 2 hours to chill and allow flavors to meld.
  2. Prepare Glasses: Take the rim of each low ball glass and moisten it with a lime wedge. Dip the rims into kosher salt to create a salted edge. Fill all glasses and a cocktail shaker with ice to chill.
  3. Shake and Serve: Pour the chilled margarita mix into the cocktail shaker until it is about two-thirds full. Shake vigorously for at least 30 seconds to properly mix and chill the drink. Strain the margarita into the prepared ice-filled glasses. Repeat the shaking and pouring process with the remaining margarita mix. Garnish each glass with optional blood orange and lime slices for a decorative and flavorful touch.

Notes

  • Use freshly squeezed juices for the best flavor and natural vibrancy.
  • Adjust the amount of sugar depending on the sweetness of the blood oranges and personal preference.
  • For a frozen version, blend the margarita mix with ice until smooth instead of shaking.
  • Adding a salted rim amplifies the traditional margarita flavor experience.
  • Keep the margarita mix refrigerated if preparing ahead to maintain freshness.
